HMS MERCURY.The Royal Navy Radio Operators Training Establishment in the Clouds
Still under construction, but I spent about two years in all here, it is so high up that one lives in a permanent cloud, well wet anyway, But the reason Leydene house Near Petersfield was chosen, was because of all the bombing of Portsmouth during the second world war. The signal school used to be next to the Victory in the dockyard, but learning the skills to be a radio operator and codes etc needs quiet, The bombing etc did not allow this, so Leydene house was compulsory purchased. It would be a wonderful place if you owned it and enjoyed living there, but to join the RN, Then spend your first year out in the country, high on a hill and no entertainment for fifteen miles/no bus, Well when I was there I mostly hated it, but now have fond memories of it
